About Us

Starmak Cattle Co. was founded by Matt Knock in 1998 when Matt purchased 50% share of Grandpa (George) Knock’s commercial Hereford cows. The Knock family has been farming & ranching West of Tea, SD since the early 1900’s. While in college Matt raised & sold club calves on the local & national level. After college Matt purchased the remaining 50% of the cows & started transitioning to more purebred Herefords & purebred Angus.

Owners, Matt & Erin Knock

While transitioning to the Purebred business Matt partnered with some of the most respected cattlemen in the country. Atkins Herefords, Delaney Herefords, Dvorak Herefords & Lounsbery Hereford Farm genetics make up much of the foundation genetics that the Starmak herd is based on today.

In 2016, Starmak Cattle Co. took on cows from Walsh Farms, MN to bring the spring calving herd to around 200 cows. The Starmak / Walsh partnership is one that we feel will be beneficial to both operations. The Walsh cows are built on a heavy Frederickson Hereford base, & complement the Starmak cows very well.

2017 marks the first Starmak / Walsh Annual Production Sale. [Click here for more information.] The two operations both have the same goals in mind —
Market breeding stock to the commercial producer that is a balanced genetic package. Moderate at birth, rapid early growth, positive carcass traits while always keeping maternal aspects at a top priority.
